Into the Ardennes: V8PRO Heads to Spa for Round 3
The circuit that signed us off in the Gen 2 era returns. This place roared for the final time with the specific note of that era of engines, before being another iconic moment where the Australian Sim Racing fraternity diced with the new tire model and its intricacies last year in the GTPro series.
Oh and it got Simon Mezzomo fired up about driving standards a few weeks ago in the Porsche Pro series as well.
Yep, it's more than just two iconic corners, a dip and a crest that separates them. You’re thinking about them right now. Eau Rouge and Radillion have over the years challenged the limits of grip, downforce, car control and commitment. Less so these days in cars that opt to glue themselves to the floor with downforce.
V8 Supercars are not those cars. Dry conditions challenge that meter, but what happens when the grandstands at La Source are filled with race fans who turn an eye to the skies only to go digging through their supplies for umbrellas?
Fire up wet weather fans, Road Atlanta wasn’t the only time Sandman will be doing the rain dance this season!
The run through Eau Rouge is a highlight at Spa
We’re poised at a bit of a juncture in the championship and the era as well. All of a sudden Jarrad Filsell hasn’t fired out of the gates with the aura of someone who looks dominating. Suddenly a crop of challengers are starting to rise to be there alongside. For the first time in the new era I feel the winds changing and all of a sudden I’m digging for my stats book with enthusiasm, ensuring I have honey and lozenges on standby for Thursday next week. Could you imagine if this thing kicks into overdrive early in the season? I think we all relish the prospect.
So heading into Wednesday night what are a couple of crucial pieces of information for us to know?

Last year’s race ended up being a trial of tinkering with fuel settings for the series and the Gen 3 chassis to see what would shake out. Fuel limits were trimmed way down to a maximum fill of 53.2 litres or 40% fuel tank. The fuel save was on the table as a potential if you found yourself only in the thickest of squabbles and just about all drivers abandoned it.
It never returned to the calendar and that much of an extreme roll of the dice to change up the format appears to be on the backburner.
That brings us to this year’s race and what to expect.
Rain was a potential at Road Atlanta last time out and it delivered. The problem was it was only a splash and only at the end and the tires in that level of rain can hang on for a fair way. The thing it did do was challenge the drivers in their ability to maintain pace on a rapidly changing race track.
The field races into Turn 1 last year at Spa
This time the weather omens are significantly more in our favour… For now… Effectively there is a 50% chance of rain across the bulk of the day Wednesday. If there is rain around it will hang around and stick with us. Don’t expect passing showers and changeable conditions is my early read on the situation. The big thing to remember at Spa is the track length of 7 kilometres. If you get the crossover wrong and miss it by a lap, its a damn long lap! The two laps of crossover point we had last time out was a total of 8.2 kilometres to go in the race. Two laps is about half a lap too many at Spa.
Lets not forget to talk about the elbows out style racing we saw in the wet and dry at Road Atlanta. Largely this is due to the nature of the narrow twisty track, however, speaking with multiple drivers about thoughts afterwards its clear a few drivers are not seeing eye to eye. Spa is wide enough that there is time to settle, but Andrew Gilliam took full advantage last time out and was able to convert that into a points lead. Raw car speed hasn’t been his biggest attribute, but consistency and willingness to challenge the status quo.
Who is your pick for this round? Hard to pass up Lobs yet again, Rattray-white took away a pole position and might just do so once again.
Tune in Wednesday from 7.45pm AEST to find out if its relaxation or retribution at Spa!
